The USS Los Angeles was originally built in
1923 at the Zeppelin works in Friedrichshafen, Germany,
and was the world's largest aircraft when first flown.
Built for carrying 20 passengers, it was commissioned
the USS Los Angeles in 1924 by Mrs. Calvin Coolidge.
The ship logged almost seven years of productive flights,
and was utilized as an experimental ship for a variety
of projects and training missions.
She was formally decommissioned at NAS Lakehurst, NJ
in 1932 after 4,398 flying hours. Accomplishments included
the development of the low-mast mooring system and pioneered
the technique of the airplane-airship hook-up. No other
rigid airship had a longer flying career. This Winston
Classic kit of the famous USS Los Angeles ZR-3 results
in a stunning 24" long display model. Plans for this
model were originally penned over 30 years ago, and
Megatech designers decided to "re-engineer" a kit to
the standards of today's discriminating model builder.
Features like laser-cut lite plywood bulkheads, contest
quality balsa and formed plastic detail parts make this
model simple to assemble for anyone with balsa kit building
experience. Extra details like clear celluloid (to simulate
rotating propellers) and black nylon string (for control
linkage and antennas), and quality covering tissue result
in a model you'll be proud to finish and display.
